Warriors gain first-round win in OT

Arapahoe came back from an early deficit against Rangeview

Sam Myers felt like he was involved in a rerun during Arapahoe's first-round state soccer playoff game against Rangeview on Nov. 1 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

Myers, a junior midfielder for the Warriors, took a pass from Liam Andersen and scored the game-winning goal with 5:39 to play in the overtime session to give Arapahoe a 2-1 victory and move the defending 5A state champions into the second round, which was scheduled for Nov. 6.

“I scored a goal in a similar spot in the past, so I just went for it and trusted that my guy would go for the ball — and he did,” said Myers. “It all worked out. I got a good pass that was on the money. Without the pass it wouldn't have happened.”

Arapahoe, the 12th seed in the 32-team state playoff bracket, fell behind No. 21 Rangeview, which grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Aiden Kirk tied the game for Arapahoe in the 59th minute and the Warriors' offensive pressure paid off with Myers' overtime goal.

“When Liam got that ball, I said this is it,” Warriors coach Mark Hampshire said about the decisive goal. “I knew it was going to be it. This was the best game I've seen him (Andersen) play all season and for Sam to finish it with that kind of composure, I knew it was going to happen.”

Rangeview's first-half goal got the attention of Arapahoe.

"Once that happened, the guys said, 'OK, that's it, we are not conceding anything else,'" Hampshire said.

“This was the best team soccer we've seen with our offense in quite a while and that's what you want in the playoffs. You want them to feel confident, even if some of the chances didn't go our way, we were creating those chances and having the confidence to do some of that stuff. The finishes are going to happen.”

Myers expected a tough game in the first round.

“We realized that every game is going to be a fight,” said Myers. “There are no easy teams. Rank doesn't matter. This year, everyone if beating everyone. You just have to come out with a positive attitude and do your best.”
