Wild West Oktoberfest debuts in downtown Golden

Eins, Zwei, Drei ... Howdy!

After a 30-year absence, Golden's Oktoberfest made a unique comeback this weekend.

Bavaria met the American West in downtown Golden Sept. 24 at the inaugural Wild West Oktoberfest. The activities and fashion was a mix of both styles, as some attendees wore dirndl dresses and lederhosen while others donned cowboy hats and boots.

YoColorado, an apparel outfitter located at 805 12th St., partnered with other local businesses to host the event. Proceeds benefited the Golden Civic Foundation.

The community's first Oktoberfest, which was held in 1978, raised funds for the Golden Chamber of Commerce, according to Transcript archives. The event was considered a success with approximately 8,000 attendees over two days.

The festival was then held annually until 1993.

Weather cooperated this year as hundreds turned out to celebrate Oktoberfest with a Western flair.

YoColorado staff members and volunteers were thrilled to bring the event back, and the Golden Civic Foundation board members were happy to have the proceeds going back into the community.

Nonprofit representatives worked the beer tent, where eight types of brews were on-tap, including several local favorites. Additionally, local food vendors were on-hand to dish out Goldenites' favorite burgers, burritos, ice cream flavors and more.

Children took turns riding the mechanical bull, and some adults tried their hand at the stein-holding competition. Under the main tent, various Bavarian- and cowboy-inspired musicians serenaded the attendees throughout the day.
