Zoo tigers get paws-on amenity in new public art

Amur tigers Yuri and Nikita will probably be found perching on and lounging under a new piece of public art called “On the Rise” by Wendy Khawaja in a new form of collaboration between Denver’s Public Art Program and the very popular Denver Zoo. The striped pair will probably have to circle and sniff for a while, but the strongly-formed circular tiered platforms, just installed inside the acre-plus bit of land called The Edge, should invite the tigers to “explore, play, exercise and sleep,” according to Brian Aucone, senior vice president for animal sciences at the zoo. ‘The Nutcracker’

Those of us who like an annual “Nutcracker” fix will want to remember that the event will appear four more times on Rocky Mountain PBS with Colorado Ballet: Dec. 18 at 9 p.m.; Dec. 19 at 1 a.m.; Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 25 at 12 a.m. (the wee hours of Christmas morning). Visit rmpbs.org/channels or stream through the holiday season on the Rocky Mountain PBS app, downloadable at rmpbs.org/pbs-video-app. We plan to watch and send donations — this production usually makes up a large part of Colorado Ballet’s revenues since it sells out each year ... More holiday fare

“Making Merry — Greatest Hits,” a 20th-anniversary celebration of Stories on Stage, will have virtual livestream readings by Denver Center Theatre favorites Jamie Horton, Candy Brown and Gabriella Cavallero, with music by composer-pianist David Nehls. Miners Alley

Miners Alley Playhouse in Golden, closed to in-person performances by the pandemic, is providing virtual shows, and readers should check the website at minersalley.com for instructions and ticket prices. For every ticket purchased, $20 will go to Miners Alley. “A Christmas Carol” will bring a one-man show by Tony Award-winning actor Jefferson Mays; “The Twelve Dates of Christmas” by Ginna Hoben is directed by Kate Gleason; “The Holidays — An Evening of Holiday Songs With Rory Pierce.” 303-935-3044.

`Own an Original’ show

Littleton’s annual art show, originally designed as a source for holiday gifts when it started 55 years ago, is inside the now-closed Littleton Museum, 6028 S. Gallup St., Littleton. The theme is “Liberating Humor,” which implies that it should offer a lift! Opened as of Nov. 20. We hope it can reopen before the closing date of Jan. 3 — or be extended?? Stay tuned ... We don’t know who won awards, but will watch for information and forward it ASAP. (Hopefully next week, we’ll know more ... 303-795-3950.

High Line Canal

The lovely High Line Canal Trail, all the length of it, has enjoyed 16 community cleanups and has 350 volunteers involved — with room for more. New mile markers are being installed and wayfaring signage and an underpass are under construction. A safe outdoor spot to walk and bike and enjoy the sun.

Boston Brass

“Art Across America: Community, Together” will be presented virtually by Newman Center Presents at 7 p.m. Dec 9. It is a compilation of the Boston Brass’s favorite music. Tickets start at $10.
