In a video update released by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the sheriff explains that the man killed in an officer-involved shooting April 3 had fired at officers with an AK-47.

Footage of the incident, included in the update posted by DCSO to Twitter, shows the 23-year-old man carrying the rifle in a case when police arrived on the scene. Sheriff Tony Spurlock explains that the man, identified as Samuel Yeager, eventually laid down on the ground, pulled out the rifle and began firing at deputies.

"Deputies returned fire and unfortunately killed the suspect at the scene," Spurlock said in the update.

In the 911 call included in the update, the caller reports a man with a gun at the Happy Canyon Road exit on I-25 North near Castle Pines "acting crazy," according to the video.

"I had to kick him out of my car because he was scaring me ... He grabbed it and started looking at me and he pointed it at me," according to the video.

When officers arrived, they repeatedly told the man to put the gun on the ground, according to the video. Yeager can be heard shouting in response and at one point says "I have the right to carry it in a case."

"(He) laid down in proned position, removed the rifle from the case, pointed the AK-47 at our deputy and began firing," Spurlock said.

 No officers were injured during the interaction.

“Consistent with policy, the involved deputies will be placed on administrative leave,” according to DCSO.

DCSO will not release more information about the shooting until an investigation has been completed, Spurlock said. 

"We wanted to make sure that the citizens of Douglas County had as much information as possible so they could understand what occurred," Spurlock said.

One nearby neighbor said that at about 6:30 p.m., while he was watching television, he heard about four gunshots in a row coming from the Happy Canyon Road bridge over I-25.

About 20 law enforcement vehicles responded to the scene, focusing on the on-ramp for I-25 North.

The scene near Castle Pines was  investigated until about 10:30 p.m., when law enforcement began clearing the area, said the neighbor, who asked to be unnamed.

Residents of the east side of the interstate said it's not uncommon for the area to see unusual activity and crimes.

"It's life on the highway," said one resident, who also asked to be unnamed.
