An ex-teacher accused of filming videos up the clothing of unsuspecting women and girls has pleaded guilting to a felony charge in Douglas County.

Steven Michael Jenkins, 56, pleaded guilty on April 8 to one count of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification for filming a victim under the age of 15, according to the 18^th Judicial District. Jenkins accepted a plea agreement that dismissed other charges against him in exchange for the guilty plea.

“We send our children to school to be educated, not to be exploited. As a parent of public-school-educated children, I am appalled at what appears to be a steady stream of those in positions of trust who victimize our kids,” 18^th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said in a statement.

In 2017, Jenkins was working in an instructional position at Renaissance Secondary School in Castle Rock when he was arrested and charged in court with multiple counts of invasion of privacy.

Police began investigating him when students at the school reported seeing him use his phone to film up the clothing of female students. Police later found videos of an estimated 10 women and girls on his phone, according to the arrest affidavit. Jenkins had also worked at Castle View High School earlier in his career.

The case was at one point poised to move to trial after a judge twice denied a plea deal reached between the defense and prosecutors. District Judge Theresa Slade denied two agreements in January, stating she did not believe they were legally sound.

Victims in attendance at the January hearings told Jenkins he had “wreaked a lot of havoc” and stole the innocence of young victims. Others called him a liar who manipulated his position of trust.

Jenkins will be sentenced in July. He could face anywhere from probation to jail or prison and must register as a sex offender.
