Three south metro football teams will be involved in quarterfinal games in the Class 5A playoffs.

Host Cherry Creek (11-0) will face longtime rival Fairview (10-1) and the Knights' record setting quarterback Aiden Atkinson at 7 p.m. Nov. 22.

The two teams were among the state's best in the 1980s and 1990s and their games drew headlines, but the schools have not played each other since 2007.

Creek's defense, which has seven interceptions and 34 sacks this season, will face a challenge in containing Atkinson who holds state career records for passing yards and touchdowns. The Bruins have outscored opponents this season at an average of 37.9 to 7.45.

Fairview averages 386.9 yards passing and scores 39.5 points a game.

Defending state champion Valor Christian (10-1) comes into its home quarterfinal contest against Columbine, which is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 22, with an offense that is scoring 37.5 points a game and averaging 405.2 yards in total offense, of which 239.7 is on the ground.

Columbine (9-2) has a potent offense build around a rushing attack that averages 263.9 yards a game.

Regis Jesuit (11-0) faces playoff savvy Pomona (7-4) in a Nov. 22 game set for 7 p.m. at Regis. The Raiders, averaging 32.9 points per game and 353.4 yards in total offense, downed the Panthers, 23-13, in the season-opening game.

Pomona got off to a 1-3 start but has won six of the last seven games, with the lone setback coming against Ralston Valley. Pomona's first three losses came to Regis, Valor Christian and Cherry Creek.

In second-round games, Cherry Creek allowed an early score but would up with a 31-14 victory over ThunderRidge. Junior quarterback Julian Hammond III passed for 268 yards and a TD for the Bruins, while junior James Walker II rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Valor Christian rolled to a 34-9 win over Mountain Vista as sophomore Gavin Sawchuk rushed for 281 yards and three TDs. Jack Howell ran for 51 yards and two scores as the Eagles rushed for 342 yards in the game.

Regis crushed Highlands Ranch, 49-7, with all the scoring in the game coming during the first three quarters.

Pomona held Legend to 116 yards of total offense in a 36-7 win. Ralston Valley, which will face Eaglecrest in the quarterfinals, held off Arapahoe, 42-21. Eaglecrest edged Metro South rival Grandview, 28-21.

Fairview kicked a 37-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game, which gave the Knights a 36-34 win over Cherokee Trail. Atkinson passed for 455 yards and five touchdowns

In the Class 4A playoffs, Heritage upset Vista Peak Prep 27-12 and Ponderosa avenged a defeat in last season's playoff semifinals to Skyline with a 16-13 victory over the Falcons. Quarterback Jack Hanenburg passed for two touchdowns for the Mustangs.

Heritage (8-3) will play Dakota Ridge (9-2) at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 22 in a quarterfinal game at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

Ponderosa (8-3) faces top-seeded Pine Creek (10-1 ) in a 1 p.m. contest on Nov. 23 at Echo Park Automotive Stadium.

Lutheran suffered a 46-8 loss to Pueblo South in a first-round 3A playoff game, and the Lions ended the season with a 6-5 record.
