Rylie Kadel and Peyton Dunn are excited to start playing volleyball for Legend.
Gyms opened for volleyball in Douglas County on July 21. Kadel was a returning first team all-state middle hitter in 2019, while Dunn comes back as second team all-state as a setter. Both were juniors.
Kadel, a 6-foot-1 senior who has committed to play at Duke next year, had 428 kills last season, a 60.3 kills percentage and a .667 hitting percentage. She also had 71 blocks and the team scored 185 points off her serves.
Dunn, a transfer from Fossil Ridge who will play at Oklahoma next season, had 853 assists and 203 digs last fall for the Titans.
Both are ready to start practicing, with three other players off last season’s 24-5 team returning — and the team will have a group of talented freshmen trying out.
“I think we will definitely be a good team,” said Kadel.
Dunn followed by saying “the leadership on the team is there for everyone.”
Legend was a state semifinalist last fall before losing to Chaparral once again. Two of the Titans’ five losses came to Chaparral.
Whether or not the fall sports season will be played is in doubt, with speculation shifting from day to day.
CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green issued a message on July 16.
“Our office supports and respects the time taken at the state level to evaluate our proposed options for resuming athletics and activities for the 2020-2021 school year,” she said. “Their timeline is our timeline and we will be ready to play, with planned modifications, once approved.”
So Kadel and Dunn will continue to wait to see if they can resume their magic.
“Having Peyton, I can’t explain in words.” said Kadel. “For sure she times (her sets) for an athlete with speed.”
Dunn admits it took a while to adjust to the front-line players last season after coming from Fossil Ridge but she really enjoys being a teammate of Kadel.
“For Rylie to be a teammate, she is such an advantage around the net,” she said. “Having her at the net is a big advantage. Rylie comes faster so I have to set her differently. She is definitely a big part of putting everything away.”
Legend hopes to put other teams away if there is a season.
“I don’t know. I’m worried,” said Dunn. “I saw the mask thing the other day.”
Kadel is on the same page.
“I hope we will get to have a season,” she concluded.
Legend coach Travis Underwood had good things to say about both Kadel and Dunn.
“Rylie’s leadership and adaptability excelled and allowed us to build on previous seasons to achieve our success last year and place Legend on the volleyball map,” said Underwood. “Peyton stepped into her position as a setter last year and helped us achieve our success.”
