What do you see as the most important responsibilities of being a County Commissioner?

“The role of the Adams County board of commissioners is to manage the affairs of the county as authorized by the state” (see Title 30 CRS). The day to day management of the 12 departments are managed by a professional county manager under the direction of the commission. I see the most important function of the commission as the formation and management of the budget. However, every function authorized by statute is a serious responsibility.

If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

Board actions are a culmination of a process of careful deliberation. Information concerning a change in policy comes from various sources. A commissioner should refrain from forming too rigid an idea of what policy needs to be prior to listening to a wide variety of voices. I would consider my term a success if I come to all policy discussions well informed and prepared to argue my point with wisdom and comity.

What is the most pressing issue for a rapidly growing Adams County and how will you address it?

The increase in the number of people moving into Adams County creates a demand for everything from housing to transportation. The rapid increase in demand increases the cost. The “most pressing” issue is the rapid rise in the cost of housing. Adams County is already aggressive in the area of affordable housing but the efforts are not able to keep up with the increasing affordability gap.

How can you balance safety with economic development when it comes to regulating the oil and gas industry?

The Adams County Board of Commissioners has limited authority to regulate oil and gas production in the unincorporated areas of the county. Our lives are made better by the energy provided from the production of oil and gas. At the same time, it is important to produce energy with the least practical impact to our health and safety. In June, the county began to require mapping of gas lines and notice to the public.

What can County Commissioners do to ease the strain of rising housing prices on Adams County residents?

The increase in housing cost area-wide is driven by factors outside the reach of county commissioners. For a limited number of the population, the commission has multiple programs aimed to provide “affordable” housing solutions. The Adams County Balanced Housing Plan (2018) is a comprehensive assessment of the shrinking affordability of housing and a plan of action. Encouraging development of additional affordable housing can be supported by commissioners.
