An 89-year-old woman has died of her injuries after a Sept. 14 dog attack in southeast Golden, city officials confirmed Sept. 18.

As of 4 p.m. Sept. 19, the woman's name hadn't been released. More information is expected in the coming days, as city officials stressed the case is still under investigation.

The woman's 12-year-old grandson was also injured in the attack. While he was transported to the hospital, city officials confirmed Sept. 19 that he's now out and recovering.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14, Golden Police officers responded to reports of an animal bite in the 15700 block of West First Avenue. Officers found two pitbulls attacking the woman in a backyard. The grandson had gone to a neighbor's house for help.

The dogs were very aggressive toward the woman and officers, who used verbal commands, stun guns and non-lethal shotguns on the dogs. These methods were ineffective, according to a city press release.

Additional officers arrived and were able to hold off the dogs. Paramedics immediately transported the woman to St. Anthony Hospital.

First responders also attended to the grandson, who ultimately had to be air-lifted to Children's Hospital. He has since been released, and is recovering.

The dogs were captured and later euthanized, the city confirmed, adding that the dogs were known to the woman and her grandson.

Golden doesn't have dog breed ban laws, city officials stated in a Sept. 15 press release. Owners are only required to have their dogs licensed and vaccinated to maintain compliance. This information is being verified regarding the two dogs involved.
