Attendees see demonstrations of cheesemaking, milk production in 19th-century life

Attendees at the Littleton Museum were given a history lesson on the various journeys of milk in the 19th century during a March 26 event. Back then, Littleton and the surrounding area was a jewel of the dairy industry, with more than 40 dairies, creameries and cheeseries along the South Platte River.

The heavier part of the raw milk gets pushed to the outside, creating skim milk, while the lighter part creates cream. The different consistencies are separated into buckets.

Along with milk festivities, some museum patrons came to bask in the warm weather and authentic depictions of 19th century life. Katherine Fulton, of the Pastel Society of Colorado, paints a homestead. She and her group have been to several locations for painting, but she said the Littleton Museum "is a favorite."

Community members came out during a warm and bright early spring day to learn about the the journey of milk in 19th-century Littleton.

The free event was put on by the Littleton Musuem, where attendees weaved their way through 1800s-style homesteads to show a way of life preserved in time.

During the day, community members were shown demonstrations of cheesemaking, milk production, butter churning, milk painting and more as museum staff immersed them in practices from many years ago.
