Frederick's Chacon returns from injury for state track meet

FREDERICK -- Ryan Chacon of Frederick High School had a tougher road than most to qualify for the state 4A track-and-field meet this weekend.

He, like everyone else in prep track, dealt with COVID-19 impacts and all its relatives. But Chacon also had to deal with something else .. a partially torn mensicus he sustained while playing basketball in mid-February.

Fast forward to the Boulder County championships June 5. He ran his first race of the season, the 800-meters, and finished 20th in a time of 2:11.89. Before the season was finished, Chacon, a senior, qualified 10th for the state 200-meter dash (preliminary race at 12:05 p.m. June 24) and was the third-fastest runner in the 400-meters, where his best time was 49.59 seconds.

Chacon, who finished eighth in the 400-meter dash (50.85 seconds) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (22.99 seconds) at the state track meet in 2019, signed a college letter of intent to run  at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.

Wyatt Schroth of the Warriors has the eighth-fastes timte in the 400-meters. He qualified for this week's state meet. The Warriors' 4-by-200-meter relay team, with the 10th-fastes time in the state this year), runs its preliminary race at state at 9:25 a.m. June 24.

The boys 4-by-400-meter relay team takes the third-fastes time (3:26.78) ionto the prelims at 4:38 p.m. Friday, June 25.  Isablla Hewitt has the 15th-best distance in the long jump (16-5 1/4). She'll compete at state starting at 8:30 a.m. June 24.
