The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office held a brief media conference this afternoon in the parking lot of Cherry Hills Community Church where Sheriff Darren Weekly spoke about the vehicle that had crashed into the side of a residential home on Grace Boulevard and Fairview Parkway. 

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two people that were injured. The driver had minor injuries while the passenger’s were more serious, according to the sheriff’s office.

“My understanding is the driver had been treated and released and the passenger is still getting treatment,” said Weekly. 

Driving along Grace Boulevard, the driver reportedly had fallen asleep. Investigators are currently looking further into if there was any type of impairment. 

The driver has been charged with Careless Driving resulting in Bodily Injury, said Weekly. If the seriousness of the injuries of the passenger increase to a serious bodily injury, the charge could change.

Weekly said he has spoken with the homeowner and assured them that they would have the sheriff’s office support as the house being hit for a second time in a short timespan is concerning. 

In January of 2019, a vehicle sped down Grace Boulevard, crossed into the Spaces neighborhood and crashed into two garages. In that incident, the driver had suffered a medical episode, said Weekly. 

The sheriff’s office will be working with the county’s traffic engineering to help fix the problem. 

“We can have more cops out here, we can try to mitigate and maybe change the landscaping,” said Weekly. “But it’s incumbent upon the drivers to understand you know the contour of the road,” said Weekly. 

He encouraged the public to avoid driving under the influence of any substances and to be well rested. 

Douglas County Traffic Engineering stated: “We recognize this is a public safety concern. Our traffic engineers are working with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to gather and evaluate all facts, which will inform next steps.”
