Through the end of last week, Frederick High School’s soccer team had a 4-2 record.  But what that does not indicate is various roadblocks to the Warriors’ season. The team had to quarantine once. Senior Wyatt Schroth played in just two of the Warriors’ first five games of a 10-game season.

There have been issues with grades as well. FHS had a roster of 13 players for its game against Fort Morgan April 1. 

“This was Casper’s (Casper Feijnen) first game back,” FHS coach J Doehring said after the Warriors blanked the Mustangs 3-0 in Frederick. “I don’t have Chris Serrano, who is my true midfielder. He picked up an injury at Northridge and is slowly working his way back to fitness. Everyone is kind of getting there. Right now, we haven’t had everybody yet.” 

Doehring blamed part of that on a delayed season. 

“We’re playing in the wrong season,” Doehring said. “We should be done. I had five starters out of the Northridge game (the Warriors’ only loss of the season) because of spring break. They scheduled trips because they didn’t plan on having to play. One of my players got it (COVID) in the Northridge game. I haven’t heard of any other team quarantining. Our numbers are down because of COVID. There are three or four kids who play baseball, which is up next. I had a couple of kids who play basketball. Their season finished late because of the playoffs. We’re down to 26 kids. We’re normally at 35.” 

Doehring’s son, Zane, scored two of the Warriors’ goals in the second half against the Mustangs, including a penalty kick late in the second half. 

“We played much better in the second half,” J Doehring said. “We couldn’t string passes together in the first half. They (Fort Morgan) got a red card. Sometimes when teams get a red card, they play harder.

We came back in the second half. We played much better in the second half. We’re running around like chickens with their heads cut off chasing the ball instead of marking a man.” 

Doehring said his team cannot get rid of the off-field distractions. 

“You have to learn to adjust and do the best you can,” he said. “It’s tough because of the number of kids we have, the grade issues, injuries. Legacy normally has 100 players. This year, they had 60. They

are cutting players who played club soccer. This year is just totally different. We aren’t the only ones dealing with it.”
